Chasing Churches

I've set a new task before myself; a sort of photojournalism journey. This journey is to chase churches. Granted, churches don't run away from you, but still, when you aren't looking for them, they are everywhere, and the minute you decide you want to photograph some...boom, you can find any! Needles to say, after 6 hours alone in my car (John Prine and James Taylor blaring), travelling through 4 counties in north Mississippi, and over 300 miles and a tank of gas gone; so far so good.

Normally, I keep my camera with me just in case, but now with this new goal in front of me; I've always got to double check that I have it, that it's charged, and oh yes, that I have a memory card or two!

My day-trip alone with my camera turned out to be quite nice. I wouldn't condone taking a photo while driving (especially with a large camera) but I couldn't help myself. The trees hung over the road and created a nice cool spot. And it looked so peaceful. So I did it. Please don't tell my mama, I'm sure that would make her a bit uneasy!

My main goal is to photograph church signs. Not the one's that say worship service 10am; but the different churches that take the time to put something worthy on their board out front. One day down, a handful of worthy church signs found.

I was zooming along Highway 51 and spotted this gem. There was no where to turn around and a line of cars behind me. U-turn = not an option at the moment. I had to drive all the way into town, make a block through town, then turn around and head back towards this church. In the end, totally worth it. I think this is my favorite so far. And it's funny.

I'm going to continue this project until I think I have photos sufficient enough to fill a book and them make a little book - Aptly titled, Chasing Churches. If you are riding along a random highway and spot a church sign that speaks to you or is funny or just catches your attention in any way, let me know. I'll drive and take a photo of it myself, or you can take a photo and upload it to Skelton Photographie on Facebook. If the book ever comes to fruition, you'd obviously get credit for the photo :) It's only fair after all.
