9/11/01

Instead of rehashing the details/facts about 9/11; I'll tell you what was going on in my life at the time.

Some dates stick out in your memory. This is definitely one of them. I had just started my Senior year in high school. School had been in session for about a month and things were moving along smoothly. May couldn't get here fast enough.

First period: some math class (sorry I can't actually remember the name!) with Coach East.
At about 8:45-8:50; our history/geography/American government/economics teacher walked in, rushed to our teacher and whispered into his ear. We, of course, all thought that someone was in trouble. The math teachers face immediately sunk. We asked what was wrong? What happened?
He said nothing. Class resumed as usual.

The bell rang. We wondered what had happened, but no one said anything.

Second period: We all then went to our American government class. Class again resumed as normal. Towards the end of the period, our teacher told us to shut our books, she had something to tell us.
She informed us that planes had hit the Twin Towers in NYC. Remember now, we are a bunch of 17-18 year old kids and had no clue what this meant. At all. We were not affected like our adult counterparts were. We simply didn't understand.

Our teacher goes on to explain that one plane crashing into a building: possibly an accident, but two plans crashing into the same area/building: on purpose. We then started to show concern.

What does it mean for us; the United States of America? Or we all in danger?
We were all confused. And shocked.

The rest of the day, our principal allowed the entire high school to gather into the school library and watch the news coverage. I can only remember that happening one other time while at school.
In 4th grade, our teacher wheeled a TV into our room and let us watch the O.J. Simpson "high speed chase."

I can barely remember what I had for supper last night, but I can remember the events of that day vividly.
